Message from Chief Mervin Cheechoo:

Greetings Membership,

As most of you know, we have been working on developing a Trust Fund Agreement as a way to save and invest some of the Self-Generated Revenue that we receive each year for the benefit of future generations of our people.

The idea of a Trust will not be new to many of you as the work on it started in 2015; it has been a goal of mine to have it completed before the end of the current term.

Council recently signed a Band Council Resolution that called for the Trust Agreement to be approved by a ratification vote by the Membership as described in the “General Rules for Ratification Votes”, a set of rules that has been approved by the Membership. The voting will start next week.

Before voting, I wanted the Membership to have opportunities to learn more about the Trust Fund so we held info sessions in Moose Factory, Moosonee, Timmins, and Kapuskasing over the past couple of months. We also had a couple of Zoom info sessions and will have two more Zoom sessions coming up that are open to Membership everywhere, not just for those in Moose Factory and Moosonee.

To register for one of these sessions please contact Jeff Hunter at or call / text 705-288-1163.

Mail-in ballots for band members who live down south can be requested by contacting Brittany Weistche-Rickard, Chief Electoral Officer at or call / text 705-288-6944.

One of our most important shared responsibilities as elected leadership and as Membership is working towards ensuring our grandchildren and their grandchildren and all our future generations have the best opportunities possible. The establishment of a Trust Fund Agreement is one of the best ways to do that.

Thank you,
Chief Cheechoo
