Community Sessions for the Proposed Amendments to Detour Agreement

Update on the Consultation and Ratification Process

February 9, 2022

As you may be aware, there are proposed amendments to Moose Cree First Nation’s existing agreement with Detour Gold. These amendments make important changes to the existing agreement, which was approved by Moose Cree Membership back in 2010. In an upcoming ratification vote, the Moose Cree Membership will get to decide whether to approve the proposed amendments.

The purpose of this notice is to give you an update on the following:

  1. The dates for consultation sessions with membership about the proposed amendments
  2. The dates of the ratification vote
  3. Information about mobile voting
  4. Information about mail-in voting

Delivery of Plain Language Booklet Explaining the Proposed Amendments

A booklet explaining the proposed amendments to the Detour Agreement will be delivered directly to Members’ homes in Moose Factory Island and Moosonee.

Please take the time to review the booklet so that you can make an informed decision when you vote on whether to approve the proposed amendments. A digital copy of the booklet is already available through the Membership section of the Moose Cree First Nation website.

Community Consultation Sessions

Community consultation sessions about the proposed amendments will be held in the coming weeks. We encourage you to attend these sessions so that your Moose Cree negotiating team can answer any questions you have about the proposed amendments.

Online consultation sessions on Zoom will be held on the following dates:

  • February 14, 2022, for General Membership at 6:30 pm
  • February 15, 2022, for Elders at 10:00 am
  • February 15, 2022, for Youth at 6:30 pm
  • February 17, 2022, for General Membership at 6:30 pm

In-person consultation sessions may be scheduled depending on pandemic restrictions.

The Ratification Vote

The process for the ratification vote will commence on February 24, 2022.

Advance Voting will take place on the following dates and in the following locations:

  1. Moose Factory – February 24, 2022, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
  2. Moosonee – February 25, 2022, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Voting will then take place on the following dates and in the following locations:

  • Cochrane – Monday, February 28, 2022, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Kapuskasing – Tuesday, March 1, 2022, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Timmins – Wednesday, March 2, 2022, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • North Bay – Thursday, March 3, 2022, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Sudbury – Friday, March 4, 2022, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
  • Moose Factory and Moosonee – Wednesday, March 9th and Thursday, March 10th from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm

Exact locations in each community will be announced next week.

PLEASE NOTE: These dates may be subject to change due to pandemic restrictions – we will immediately update you should any changes occur.

Mail-in Voting will commence on February 9, 2022 and conclude on March 10, 2022. If you would like to vote by mail or if you would like the mobile voting team to assist you please contact Brittany Weistche-Rickard at:

Mail-in ballots MUST be received by March 10, 2022 at 8 pm.
