Niska 1 2022 Service
As a result of several “touching bottom” during the Niska 1 2021 season, the Owen Sound Transportation Company conducted soundings of the navigational channel between Moosonee and Moose Factory Island, in November 2021. These soundings indicated that dredging would be required to provide for safe passage in 2022.
Owen Sound Transportation Company has contracted with Riggs Associates Ltd., of London, Ontario, to provide the specifications for Ocean Dredging DM Ltd., of Quebec, Quebec, to carry out the dredging this summer. Both firms are mobilizing personnel and equipment to arrive in Moosonee over the next 2 weeks. Dredging is expected begin in early June and efforts will be made to provide a partial service by July 15th or earlier.
Officials are working with community leaders to determine a schedule that will assure the Niska 1 will be available to transport goods, vehicles and people during the dredging operations. Once the dredging work has cleared certain high spots in the channel, as its first priority, officials will determine a schedule that will enable our customers to plan their use of the Niska 1 service, for the remainder of the 2022 season.
“Our staff are striving to assure that the disruption from this necessary dredging operation is minimized as much as possible and we will be working diligently with your communities’ leaders this summer,” stated David Baxter, Interim President and Chief Executive Officer with the Owen Sound Transportation Company.
