Canada Day Celebrations

Council would like feedback from the Membership about celebrating Canada Day this year given the recent issues that have impacted First Nation communities across the country.

The discovery of the lost Children of Residential Schools has had huge effects on survivors of residential schools, including survivors of local compounds, and their families and descendants and have reignited challenging emotions with respect to our traumatic relationship with Canada and Canadians.

We have received comments from some members that MCFN should place a greater celebratory emphasis on Aboriginal Day rather than Canada Day, while other members still want to see Canada Day celebrated. Some members suggest that MCFN celebrate Canada Day while wearing Orange Shirts to support Indigenous communities.

Council is very interested in hearing comments from more Members. Provide your input by completing this short survey.
