October 25, 2023Regular Membership Meeting
October 31, 2023Earlier this fall, the University of Manitoba attempted to deploy a small research tripod at the mouth of the Moose River, just off of Ship Sands Island.
This small tripod is equipped with sensors that monitor sounds from marine mammals, track fish, and measure basic water properties like temperature, salinity, oxygen, pH, and algae. The tripod has an anchor and a float, which serves to transmit its location, and is also necessary to pick the tripod back up.
Unfortunately, the research tripod is missing.
During deployment, the lines got crossed in the fast current and the float was pulled under water. The research team attempted to drag for it with a grappling hook, but didn’t have time to undertake a comprehensive search.
Attached are sets of coordinates with the probable location of the tripod. Water depth was around 13 ft during deployment. If any community members happen to spot the tripod while they are out on the water, we ask that you note the location or mark the tripod if possible, and contact Alex Litvinov in the Moose Cree Lands and Resources department so a retrieval attempt can be made. .
Thank you for your assistance!
