Lake Sturgeon Project Research Trip for Moose Cree Youth

The Moose Cree First Nation Resource Protection – OPG partnership environment team is pleased to announce that we will be inviting 2 to 4 youth to go on a trip to the North French River and Lower Mattagami Complex during October 2019. Our environment team and the Wildlife Conservation Society Canada (WCSC) are working together on a Lake Sturgeon Project. This project tracks and monitors sturgeon using traditional knowledge and western science to better understand the impacts of hydroelectric dams on our rivers, creeks, and fish.

Where you’ll be going, study sites:

Site 1: Lower Mattagami Complex – a set of four dams are located 70 Kilometre northeast of Kapuskasing and about 150 kilometres upstream of Moose Factory.

Site 2: North French River – located approximately 70 kilometres north of the town Cochrane and flows into the Moose River, approximately 30 kilometres upstream from Moose Factory.

When you’ll be going:

  • Tentatively set for October 2019
  • Two nights camping at each study site location

What you’ll be doing:

  • Joining our team as we go out on the rivers to collect data
  • Transportation, food, and accommodations will be provided
  • Youth that do not have camping gear (waders, boots, sleeping bag, etc.) will have these items provided
  • Youth will be paid for each day that they are on the trip

What you’ll gain from the program:

  • Knowledge of sturgeon (namayo) and impacts from hydroelectric dams
  • Knowledge of our rivers, creeks and fish
  • Gain new skills and experiences that are relevant to environmental monitoring and stewardship
  • Learn a hands-on experience with the tools and technology we use to collect scientific ecological information
  • Great experience to add to your resume when applying to jobs or education
