Moose Cree First Nation operates the water treatment plant and the sewage lagoon system that services all of Moose Factory Island. In 2015, MCFN was informed by inspectors that both of those systems were operating beyond their capacity. This is both a health concern for our community and an environmental concern as well.
Upon finding all this out in 2019, Chief Mervin Cheechoo and the Council decided that work must finally begin on these projects and made upgrading the water treatment plant and the sewage lagoon the highest priority as it is a health concern and because it is preventing other important work from being done. For example, until the water treatment plant and sewage lagoon are upgraded, MCFN cannot complete renovation work on the boarded-up houses and there also cannot be any new construction anywhere on Moose Factory Island.
As directed by Chief & Council, the Public Works department has been hard at work over the past year on developing a plan of action. Several companies that have expertise with these kinds of projects submitted plans and a company called Stantec Inc. was chosen to work on the sewage lagoon and a company called JR Cousin Consulting Ltd was chosen to work on the water treatment plant. Both companies are highly qualified and have extensive experience and knowledge, it was Stantec Inc. that did the inspections back in 2015 so they know what needs to be done.
Chief & Council reviewed and approved the workplans submitted by both companies. The plans are for the work on upgrading the sewage lagoon to be completed by the summer of 2022 and the water treatment plant upgrade to be completed by the summer of 2023. Updates to Membership will be provided regularly on the progress of both projects.
Funding for these projects is being provided by Indigenous Services Canada, MCFN will not be spending its own money.
