On June 19th, 2009, Moose Cree First Nation was advised of a boating accident upriver from the community of Peawanuck, Ontario. One of the two occupants managed to make it back to the community and the other, namely, Senior Constable Wilfred James Chum remains missing. To this day, the search continues.
Within the first few hours of the incident, the community members of Peawanuck commenced search and rescue operations. Subsequently, the OPP, Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service, the Canadian Rangers and the Canadian Forces Search and Rescue joined in on the search. This morning (June 25th), Chief George Hunter from Peawanuck served notice that some of the external organizations plan to pull out from the search and rescue operations and he called upon the Moose Factory Search and Rescue Unit to assist in the search.
Given the extent and the remote location of Peawanuck, the search is very costly. Samplings of the costs are as follows: helicopter is $1,500.00 per hour, a chartered plane to Peawanuck is $5,000.00. To that end, we appeal to your organization/firm for a financial contribution
